I have finally found a new way to oxidize silver in an eco-friendly way that is also suitable for vegans. It is yet another food ingredient - black salt (also used in vegan food). Unlike eggs it is not animal derived, but like eggs it contains plenty of sulfur to turn silver a beautiful dark & even black colour. It is a natural ingredient not created in a lab, which means that there is less impact on the environment. Although as far as I know it is mined from the earth in India, so it's not as renewable as eggs. Black salt offers a good alternative to eggs & it's also easier to use, although there is no getting away from the long hours it takes to oxidize silver in a natural way.
